When you take on any type of remodel for your home, it’s likely that you’re going to have to replace the flooring. Choosing a style of flooring may seem like an easy choice, but the reality is that there are thousands of choices out there- offering different practicalities, prices, pros, cons, and designs trends. Besides the obvious hardwood floor, there are many other viable options! The flooring you choose can be an easy way to kid-proof your home by going with a scratch resistant option, or act as a way to save money with a budget-friendly option. Design companies are pushing natural colors and patterns, but whatever you’re going for- it’s best to make a decision after you’ve gone through all the options.

Wood-Plank Tile and Vinyl flooring are becoming popular choices as a replacement for traditional wood; they provide all the looks and luxurious feel of wood while being affordable, scratch resistant, easy to clean, waterproof, and overall much more durable. These style of floorings come in a huge variety of different kinds of “wood” finishes and stains to fit any style of home- from modern colors like gray to dark mahogany stains. You can also find unique patterned tiles and luxury vinyl in wood finishes for a more modern look.

Brick Tile is available in a number of different shades and patterns and brings a relaxed, European feel to any space. Brick is great for indoor and outdoor use, and patterned brick tile looks particularly great in patio spaces and beautiful Italian inspired kitchens!

Bamboo flooring is actually harder and more sturdy than the average hardwood floor. Like most options, bamboo is offered in a variety of different looks and colors which look identical to authentic wood flooring. It’s important to note that while bamboo is a more eco-friendly option, it should stay out of bathrooms and kitchen, as it doesn’t do well with moisture.

Cork is a widely unknown option and is regarded for how comfortable it is to walk on, as it’s not as hard as other conventional floorings like tile. Additionally, cork flooring adds an acoustic quality to any room. Cork flooring is best for dark, dry areas, as the color can fade when in constant contact with sunlight. Try it in a home office, theater or music room!

Concrete flooring may seem unconventional and utilitarian, but it’s gaining popularity quickly. This sleek flooring is reminiscent of New York style and instantly gives any space a contemporary feel. Although concrete looks great and is very cost effective, it can be very uncomfortable to walk on all day and often makes rooms feel colder.

Traditional hardwood floors have stood the test of time for a reason- but they can be pricey and may not last as long as some other alternatives. Options are important, after all, home design is not a one-size-fits-all industry. We’re excited to see a rise of some of these new flooring trends, along with new innovations in the design community!
